Next week, Disney will release the first trailer for "Iron Man 3," but until then, here's a look at what the film will be about.

The plot for the third film leaked online earlier today via Stitch Kingdom. Check it out below:

"Iron Man 3" will be released May 3, 2013.

"Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?"

Currently, if you head over to the film's Facebook page, it's offering a sneak peak at the movie once the page gets enough "likes."

We'll have the trailer up for the film upon its release October 23.

'Iron Man 3' Teaser Shows Pepper Potts In Trouble

The First Trailer For 'Iron Man 3' Is As Awesome As Expected

The 'Iron Man 3' Trailer Feels Awfully Similar To 'The Dark Knight' Trilogy

iron man 3

Earlier this morning, Marvel unveiled the first trailer for "Iron Man 3."

While we know the sequel is following the "Extremis" storyline (more on that later), the more we watched it, Stark's fallen hero storyline reminded us eerily of another recent superhero film.

We couldn't help but notice the latest installment of Iron Man seems to share many similarities with Nolan's Batman universe.

(Granted, it's not the first three-quel to take this route. "Spider-Man 3" also looked at a world where Peter Parker briefly threw away the Spidey suit.)

We're not saying that the two will be identical in the least–there's no Alfred ("J.A.R.V.I.S."), Rachel Dawes (Pepper Potts), or Batmobile (does the Iron Man suit count?)–however, there are definitely some parallels between the two.

The fact that Tony Stark is essentially Marvel's Bruce Wayne is fodder in itself; however, while witnessing Stark down on his luck it's easy to ask ourselves the same question Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character dwells upon in "The Dark Knight Rises": "Do you think he's [Iron Man] coming back?"

Their girl gets taken.

(Note, this is from "The Dark Knight.")

Everything You Need To Know About The 'Iron Man 3' Villain

iron man 3 the mandarin

Now that the "Iron Man 3" trailer has been out for a day, one of the many questions on everyone's mind is the exact identity of the film's villain.

We know Ben Kingsley's playing The Mandarin; however, despite a lot of explosions, multiple Iron Man suits, and a desperate-looking Tony Stark, we didn't get any shots of the real bad guy in action.

For those unfamiliar with the comics, we've broken down the mysterious Mandarin and his connection to Stark.

We also think he may not be the only villain in the film.

Here's everything you need to know about the latest "Iron Man" villain.

The Essentials:

The Mandarin's been featured in the Iron Man comics since 1964. A descendant of Genghis Khan, he's essentially out to avenge himself against the hand life dealt him (His parents died soon after his birth, he was left penniless after his savings were spent on the his trainings in combat, and the Chinese government took away his home after he couldn't pay taxes.) What better way to achieve those goals than world domination?

His beef with Stark:

His fighting techniques employ a level of combat combined with science. Basically, Mandarin looks to take weapons of mass destruction and turn them against their own countries. With that in mind, Tony Stark's technology is of high interest to Mandarin.

(Perhaps this means we'll see the character using Stark's technology against him and the U.S. government?)

The deal with the rings:

mandarin rings

They're no joke. The Mandarin's true testament to power are the rings he found aboard an alien ship (really). We've broken down each of the individual rings' functions below:

Left Hand:

  • Pinky: Ice beam
  • Ring Finger: Mind control
  • Middle Finger: Electric beam
  • Index Finger: Heat ray / flame blaster
  • Thumb: various electromagnetic powers

Right Hand:

  • Pinky: Takes the light out of an area. (think the Deluminator in Harry Potter)
  • Ring Finger: Disintegrate objects
  • Middle finger: Creates vortexes
  • Index finger: Creates magnetic waves / sonic vibrations
  • Thumb: Ability to change matter's shape or form

This Marvel illustration offers some variations on the powers

However, we're betting Kingsley's Mandarin isn't the only villain Stark should fret.

guy pearce iron manFrom the looks of it, and if you know anything about Iron Man characters, Guy Pearce's role of Aldrich Killian will center around another bad guy.

Our reasoning?

When Pearce was first interviewed for his role, he played it off as nothing more than "cameo stuff." However, we've seen / heard that before.

Killian's well known in the Marvel universe as a scientist who created an Extremis technology that allows nanotechnology to bind with a human (aka the Iron Man suit with Tony Stark which appears to be in full use this film).

In the comics, funding for the project was pulled and Killian took matters into his own hands giving the product to terrorists.

This seems feasible for the plot considering there were comics featuring Mandarin planning to unleash an army of Extremis soldiers.

10 Things We Learned From Watching The 'Iron Man 3' Trailer

$

pepper potts iron man 3

If you're like us, you've watched the "Iron Man 3" trailer more than once.

The relatively somber picture of a dark Tony Stark left us with a lot of questions.

What's the deal with Guy Pearce's role in the film? Why are there so many Iron Man suits? And, who's the girl making moves on Stark?

If the trailer left you confused as to where the sequel is heading, we've broken it down for you including some answers to the very vague released plot and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it giant stuffed pink bunny and tattoo.

The film will follow the "Extremis" storyline.

There's a six-story comic from 2005-2006 follows the invention of a serum / virus, "Extremis." The serum is supposed to be used solely for military purposes to engineer a Super Soldier.

Parts of the "Extremis" storyline were used in the first film for Stark's origin story (the bomb exploding during his tour in Afghanistan, taking deathly shrapnel to the chest, etc.).

The serum basically reboots the entire human system with better organs, faster reflexes and healing abilities among other heightened senses. Sounds great until you find out it's only compatible with about 2.5 percent of the population.

We're betting the film will most likely follow the fallout of how this serum affects Aldrich Killian (involved with its creation), Tony Stark, the government, and particularly how The Mandarin sees it as beneficial.

There's more than one villain.

Sure, Ben Kingsley is being touted as the main bad guy, Mandarin.

However, how many superhero movies three films deep (Spider-Man, TDKR) do you know to play ball with one main antagonist?

We got a look at Guy Pearce who will be playing the role of Aldrich Killian, the geneticist who serves as one of the bad guys in the "Extremis" story arc.

As well, comic character Eric Slavin (James Badge) will be introduced in the film. In the comics, he goes on to become a RoboCop-esque cyborg villain Coldblood.

Pepper Potts gets kidnapped.

Could she be strapped to some sort of "Extremis" mechanism?

the hunger games

2012 was the year of Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Liam Neeson.

We said goodbye to a vampire clan and a bat dressed in black, and three films brought in more than a billion dollars each (The Avengers, TDKR, and Bond).

While its uncertain whether 2013 will bring another billion dollar movie, there are contenders from Disney and Lionsgate hoping to hit that mark with a trip to Oz and a girl on fire.

What other films should you look forward to in the next 12 months?

We've sifted through all of the movies coming out in 2013 and have chosen the most-anticipated films of the year.

Whether you're a horror nut, a superhero fiend, looking for a few laughs, or are a serious film aficionado, there's something here for everyone.

"Gangster Squad"

Release Date: January 11

Why to see it:

Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, and Ryan Gosling as gangsters.

After the shooting in Aurora, Colorado at a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in July Warner Bros. postponed the film until the new year. It then underwent a reshoot due to the controversial shoot up of a theater at the movie's end. It's unsure how a re-edit affected the final outcome, but the film was highly anticipated before its push back to January.

Plus, it will be the first time we see Emma Stone and Gosling reunite onscreen since "Crazy, Stupid, Love."

"A Good Day To Die Hard"

Release Date: February 14

Why to see it:

We don't care if its the fifth film in the "Die Hard" franchise. If Bruce Willis is in it taking down helicopters and bad guys, we're sold.

Also, if men are looking for a perfect film to bring the girlfriend to for Valentine's Day, you're going to want to see the "007 of South Plainfield."

"Oz: The Great and Powerful"

Release Date: March 8

Why to see it:

James Franco's Oscar host privileges may be revoked; however, there's no denying the actor's talents lighting up both the big screen and the small

'Iron Man' Will Be Wielding Chinese Gadgets Thanks To Huge New Product Placement Deal

iron man 3 bunnyWile E. Coyote has ACME and billionaire Tony Stark will have TCL.

Don't recognize the name? You may soon. Or, at least that's what the Chinese electronics company hopes.

The Creative Life (TCL) which recently bought the rights to Grauman's Chinese Theater for $5 million– (yes, it will be renamed the TCL Chinese Theater) – has announced a product placement deal to appear in the upcoming "Iron Man 3."

Everything from Tony Stark's motion panel device to his smart TV and mobile handsets will be from the Chinese company.

Chairmain and co-founder Tomson Li told Bloomberg News at CES in Las Vegas last week their plan is to compete with big dogs, Apple and Samsung.

“I believe our new generation of products are as good as those from Samsung and Apple,” said Li. “This Iron Man cooperation is very useful for us to promote the TCL brand in the global market, including the U.S. and China.”

This isn't the first brand placement for the company though. According to TCL, they've also done previous promotions with "Transformers: Dark of the Moon,""The Avengers,""The Dark Knight Rises," and "Cloud Atlas."

"Iron Man 3" hits theaters May 3.

'Iron Man' Falls To Earth In This New Movie Poster

Marvel has released a new poster for "Iron Man 3" and it's brilliant.

It strays from the conventions of a typical comic book and film poster by displaying our hero, Tony Stark, in a rare vulnerable, defeating position as he frefalls to Earth.

There aren't any other posters we can think of where you normally see the protagonist of the film upside down.

A more chilling, typical poster for the film would have simply shown Stark's heavily damaged Iron Man mask; however, we've seen that done before.

There's a new poster out for "Iron Man 3" showing not one, but eight Iron Men all dressed in different suits.

Who's wearing the suits?

Well, there are seven Avengers in total including Robert Downey Jr.'s "Iron Man" and Nick Fury, but we doubt that's the case.

These Iron Men look like they mean business. For all we know, they're playing for the other team.

Either way, this looks awesome.

Tony Stark Will Drive Audi's Electric Supercar In 'Iron Man 3'

audi r8 e-tron tony stark iron man 3 robert downey jr

The Tony Stark of the "Iron Man" films may be inspired by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, but in the latest installment of the franchise, the inventor-playboy-superhero will be driving an electric Audi.

In the recently released "Iron Man 3" trailer, Stark is shown driving the R8 e-tron, the electric version of Audi's supercar.

Product placement in a film that revolves around futuristic technology, with a healthy dose of fast-paced action, is a natural fit, General Manager of Brand Marketing for Audi of America Loren Angelo says:

"Similar to the position of the R8 an an innovation leader, Iron Man's character consistently evolves throughout the trilogy as he masterminds new trends in technology and engineering."

The Germany luxury brand was also the ride of choice in the first two installments of the film. The R8, R8 Spyder, A8, S5, and Q7 have all been featured, according to Audi.

Plans for production of the R8 e-tron were put on ice last October, but were back on track as of January.

iron man 3

When "Iron Man 3" hits the big screen this summer, there will be two versions of the film.

Marvel Studios announced that Chinese distributor DMG entertainment will release a different version of the film in China.

Both Marvel and DMG collaborated to make the film as some of the footage in the new film was shot in Beijing.

China often censors its movies and is strict when it comes to the both the material and amount of foreign films shown.

Last year, nearly 30 minutes were cut out of "Cloud Atlas" when it premiered in Beijing without the producers' knowledge.

According to the statement, the main difference between the two films will be the addition of Chinese actress Fan Bingbing overseas.

Bingbing was shown in the Chinese international trailer for the film along with Chinese actor Wang Xueqi.

Xueqi will also appear in all other U.S. and international versions of the film.

Zombie Film 'World War Z' Changes Scene After Fearing Chinese Censors

$

brad pitt world war z

When executives at Paramount viewed the latest cut of the $175 million Brad Pitt zombie film "World War Z," they were not concerned by the violence or its reengineered ending. They were worried about a minor plot point that involved a sensitive topic: China.

In the offending scene, characters debate the geographic origin of an outbreak that caused a zombie apocalypse and point to China, a Paramount executive told TheWrap.

Normally the detail would not have merited discussion at the top echelons of the studio. But given the fast-rising prominence of the Chinese market, state censorship and the quotas for U.S. releases, the studio advised the movie producers to drop the reference to China and cite a different country as a possible source of the pandemic, an executive with knowledge of the film told TheWrap.

The change was made in recent days in the hopes of landing a deal for one of Paramount’s biggest summer movies to play in China, the world's fastest-growing film market.

"It’s not a huge plot point,” an individual with knowledge of the studio’s plans told TheWrap. “But it’s safe to say [they’re] going to want a release there.”

China passed Japan as the largest international source of box office revenue in 2012, contributing $2.7 billion, a 36 percent increase over the previous year. And some analysts say the Asian giant will pass the United States in standalone box office revenue by 2020.

While China has loosened its restrictions on the number of foreign films that can screen in the country, its film board continues to wield a great deal of influence, causing unprecedented changes in plots, release strategies, casting and other elements of Hollywood production.

Marvel Studios announced on Friday it would release an alternate version of “Iron Man 3” in China featuring China’s leading movie star Fan Bingbing, as well as offer specially prepared bonus footage made exclusively for the Chinese audience.

Also read: Movies That Hollywood Changed for China (Photos)

iron man 3 chinaMarvel had initially planned “Iron Man 3” as a Chinese co-production, a tactic that has been taken with films like “Looper” and “The Karate Kid,” in part because co-productions are not subject to China’s quota for imported films. Chinese censors must still approve them.

In the case of “The Karate Kid,” censors objected to the Chinese villain, so Sony cut 12 minutes of the film to secure a release, which came later than initially planned.

“If you’re going to shoot a film that will be released in China, [scrutiny] is inevitable,” David Franzoni, the Oscar-winning producer and screenwriter, told TheWrap. Franzoni would know better than most since he wrote the script for a drama being produced by the Chinese government’s investment fund, the Xi’an Qujian Film & TV Investment Group.  Antoine Fuqua will direct the 8th century tale of a love affair between a Chinese general and one of the emperor’s concubines.

Franzoni said the Chinese film board approved his treatment but then found flaws in the script. He must now choose between fictionalizing the tale or changing his take on history enough to mollify the censors.

“Theoretically they can make you reshoot scenes,” Franzoni said, comparing the film board’s scrutiny to studio notes. “They have a lot of power so you want to try to be sure you have it all down the first time.”

While Franzoni tries to avoid running afoul of censors before production begins, in other cases studios don’t alter their movies until post-production. Chinese censors cut large chunks out of several movies released last year, including 40 minutes from “Cloud Atlas” and 12 minutes from “Men in Black 3,” excising all scenes in Chinatown.

They also cut parts of the latest James Bond film, “Skyfall,” including a scene that featured the assassination of a nameless Chinese security guard.

The elimination of that sequence had little bearing on the final creative product, and keeping it in the film was not worth surrendering the Chinese market.

Also Read: MPAA Report: Global Box Office Breaks Records, China Becomes 2nd Largest Market

Similarly, the minor alteration to a $240 million dollar zombie film will go unnoticed by viewers, but it speaks to the substantial influence China is having on American cinema.

“The Chinese Communist Party wants to have a unified message,” Stanley Rosen, director of USC’s East Asian Studies Center who has also published articles and a book on film, told TheWrap. “They are getting better in terms of what subject matter is allowed to be shown, but worse in terms of remaining hyper-sensitive to anything that puts China in a bad light.”

"Theoretically they [Chinese film board] can make you reshoot scenes. They have a lot of power so you want to try to be sure you have it all down the first time,"– David Franzoni, producer and screenwriter

In the case of “World War Z,” Paramount didn’t wait for Chinese censors to view the film. Before screening it for anyone in China and negotiating for distribution, the executives recommended the change.

“Just the fact that China somehow is the origin of a pandemic with the food safety problem and the SARS epidemic, that would never get approved in China,” Rosen added. “They are wise in taking that out.”

Rosen, who believes studios will soon have to make movies specifically for the Chinese marketplace, said he was surprised Paramount felt “World War Z” stood a chance of gaining distribution in China. The country has strict laws outlawing any movies that deal with magic, horror or superstition.

China only opened its market to the Hollywood studios in 1994, when its own film industry had reached its nadir. “It wasn’t out of admiration for Hollywood but to save the Chinese film industry,” Rosen said. “People weren’t going to the movies.”

At the time, China only permitted 10 foreign movies to screen, then increased it to 20 before the current total of 34. Those additional 14 slots are all reserved for IMAX or 3D films.

Most of the American movies that succeed in China are big-budget blockbusters like “Avatar” and “The Amazing Spider-Man,” where a creative decision is influenced as much by box office implications as any artistic ideal.

“If you’re making a film about a zombie apocalypse, you’re not going to worry about the integrity of the filmmaker,” Rosen said. “You’re trying to make money.”

Initial tracking for the film has the sequel earning north of $125 million upon its debut when it opens May 3.

Boxoffice.com projects the film to debut at $151 million.

Last year's Marvel superhero film "The Avengers" went on to earn a record-breaking $207.4 million last year in its premiere weekend at the box office.

The film will help turn around a dismal box-office year so far.

Currently, Disney is leading the pack at theaters already. "Oz the Great and Powerful" has the highest opening of the year with $79.1 million.

Placing second is DreamWorks Animation's "The Croods" with $43.6 million.
